Data Sets for Download

For this project, we have produced a number of original datasets, and we have also written code to help implement those datasets. Below you can download the codebooks and relevant files for eight different datasets or pieces of code. Before downloading the data, we ask you to provide your name and e-mail so that we can contact you if we make any changes to the data or make new data available. Please contact us with any questions or notify us if you catch any errors.

Comparative Competition Law Dataset

The Comparative Competition Law Dataset provides detailed coding on competition law provisions from 131 jurisdictions—126 countries and five regional organizations—from the beginning of modern competition law to 2010. In total, it contains information coded from 700 competition laws.

Comparative Competition Law Index (“CLI”)

The Competition Law Index (the “CLI”) is a measure of the stringency of competition regulation. It is available for countries around the world from 1889 to 2010. The CLI quantifies the key elements of the authority granted to regulate competition and the substance of competition laws that are in force in each jurisdiction in each year since the country introduced its first competition law.

Comparative Competition Law Expert Survey

This dataset reports the results of a survey administered to competition law experts from around the world. The survey asked about three topics: (1) the political independence of competition agencies, (2) the role that courts play in the development of competition law, and (3) the role that private parties play in the enforcement of competition law.

Comparative Competition Law Narrow Application Dataset

This dataset provides additional information that compliments the Comparative Competition Law Dataset (“CCLD”). Specifically, for each provision coded in the CCLD, this dataset codes whether the provision only applies narrowly to certain industries or sectors.

Comparative Competition Law Dataset Documentation

This dataset provides additional information that compliments the Comparative Competition Law Dataset (“CCLD”). This dataset is at the raw data at law level. Its primary purpose is to provide additional citations, information, and documentation for many of the choices made while coding the law dataset.
